Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium

The stadium will go into the history books as the first newly built World Cup stadium to be completed.

Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium
Location: Port Elizabeth
Capacity: 45 000
Matches scheduled: Eight

The stadium was earmarked for last year’s Fifa Confederations Cup, but was later withdrawn by the 2010 South African local organising committee, fearing that it wouldn’t be completed in time for the Confederations Cup. Eight matches including a third- and fourth-place play-off and a quarterfinal will be played at the stadium. The roof of the facility has been designed to resemble the petals of a flower, earning it the nickname “The Sunflower”. It is built right beside the North End Lake, in the heart of Port Elizabeth, with spectacular views of the lake on the one side, and the sea on the other.
