Gauteng music picks: October 22 2010

Melody, beats and lyrics come together this week.

  • The legendary DJ Craze is back in South Africa and will be performing his Johannesburg at Carfax on Sunday 24 October. Craze is world famous for who his DJ sets that include hip hop, Miami bass, breaks, drum n bass and well as his turntablism for which he is the only solo DJ in history to claim the World DMC Champion trophy 3 times consecutively. 

  • The 2010 Urban Voices Poetry and Theatre festival takes place at The Bassline on Saturday 23 October.   This years festival includes performances by internationals  Patricia Smith(New York) and Lemon Andersen(New York), Beau Sia(Los Angeles) along with various poets from South Africa including Natalia Molebatsi and Lisa Combrinck. For the first time, Urban Voices  programme also features  Hip Hop Theatre with Lemon Andersen in’ County of Kings’, produced by the award winning director Spike Lee. The County of Kings, a one man performance play, traces the history and influence of Hip  Hop. The final performance of Country Of Kings takes place at the Market Theatre Lab (at The Bus Factory at 3 President Street) on Friday 22 October.

  • There is a mini folk festival of sorts taking place at Wolves in Illovo on the afternoon of Sunday 24 October. Entitled ‘What We Are Going To Be Doing On Sunday’ the line-up features a great cross section of those singles and duos who are playing around Joburg at the moment. The Frown, Shotgun Tori (of Fret), Gil Hockman, Bongeziwe, Loro and Donnagh Roberts provide the tunes with Eazy Stevezy laying down the spoken word vibes. The shows starts at 1pm. Entrance is R40.
