A LeadSA survey that shows nearly 2 500 people bribed traffic cops over the past three months is just the tip of the iceberg, the Justice Project South Africa (JPSA) said on Monday.
“We hasten to add that as surprising as it may seem, the poll has not revealed just how bad things are, even though the figures produced are shocking to some,” the JPSA said in a statement. “We would estimate that the results are merely the tip of the iceberg and the problem is way larger than even this poll has revealed.”
Primedia radio stations and Independent Newspapers did the survey as part of its LeadSA campaign.
It reported on Monday morning that almost 2 500 people responded “yes” when asked if they had bribed a metro police officer in the past three months.
Most of the bribes were paid in Johannesburg, with 1 889 incidents reported, followed by Ekurhuleni with 387 and Tshwane with 121.
Capetonians seemed to be the most law-abiding citizens with only nine people admitting to bribing officers. — Sapa
