It’s not often we’re compelled to use an exclamation mark in a headline, but it’s been a trying few days.
We made the difficult business decision to take down the Mail & Guardian website at about 10.30am on January 26, rather than potentially compromise the security of our readers by attempting to clean up hackers’ code while staying live.
The M&G technical team worked throughout the night to build a new, secure server and transfer the clean website to the new server. There might still be a couple of hiccups here and there, and we’d appreciate any reader feedback if you notice anything out of the ordinary.
And speaking of readers — we’re immensely grateful for the support that readers have shown us during this period, including our competitors, and also security experts who volunteered their time to actually come into the office to proffer help. It’s been humbling to experience the high regard in which people hold the Mail & Guardian brand, and has reminded us that we don’t just work on a news website.
