Durban music pick: March 25 2011

Two of the world’s most internationally acclaimed guitar virtuosi and original music folk music innovators happen to both hail from Durban and they perform a rare live duo show in Durban this weekend.

Not merely a showcase of the musicians’ individual talents, the pair have created a unique collaborative show which evinces a tight sonic synergy as it creates mesmerising and interwoven sonic tapestry. Due to the escalating demands of their respective solo careers, it has been five years since Buttery and van der Spuy produced a show such as this and, as there is one show only, those even remotely interested in some of the finest live guitar prowess on the planet ought to book early.

Buttery was recently the featured artist in the highly prestigious Guitar Player magazine and last year scooped both the SAMA for Best Instrumental Album and the Standard Bank Golden Ovation Award for Best Show at the National Arts Festival. Similarly, van der Spuy has been reaping accolades aplenty and recently had his album A Bird In The Hand awarded a rare 5/5 rating by Germany’s influential Jazzthetik magazine.

The Barnyard Theatre, Gateway, Monday March 28. Doors open at 6.30pm; show starts at 8pm. Tickets are R100. Tel: 031 566 3045 Email [email protected]
