Discovering JP Redpath

Discovering Jp Redpath

JP Redpath: Shipwrecks (Independent)

I recently discovered the music of JP Redpath in his opening set for Cape guitarist Righard Kapp’s recent live performance in Johannesburg. Clearly nervous, Redpath kept his eyes to the ground and immersed himself in his delicate songs.

However, in the intimate space that is the Bioscope, his finger style and enchanting voice impressed me.

I was therefore grateful when he handed me a handmade copy of his debut EP, Shipwrecks. Highlights include the gorgeous Green Grass, which sounds like a dead ringer for Swedish folk artist José González.

The title track Shipwrecks is another that sits somewhere between early Paul Simon and Nick Drake.

In all, Shipwrecks is a great little collection of intimate acoustic guitar songs. Redpath says this EP is a precursor to a full album he is planning on recording. Until then, this EP will do nicely.
