Cape theatre picks: September 2 2011

The eighth annual Voorkamer Fees takes over the West Coast town of Darling for the weekend of September 2 to 4.

It is unique in the arts world, combining community spirit and world-class entertainment. Part of the appeal is the adventure. Visitors buy a theatre ticket that takes them in a taxi on a mystery route through Darling. There are 21 residents who host professional performances by local and international artists in their homes.

Music, drama, mime, comedy and cabaret are performed in their lounges or voorkamers (literally, front rooms). The taxis take festivalgoers from home to home on a number of set routes. Each route features three homes and three performances. The beauty of this format is the element of surprise — visitors don’t know beforehand which performances they will see on their route or which homes they will visit.

Darling, from September 2 to 4. Book at Tel: 082 321 7542 or 022 492 3427. For more information, go to www.voorkamerfest-darling.co.za.
