Jo’burg music picks: October 7 2011

Chimurenga stars battle for the limelight against British megastars Coldplay this week.

? Chimurenga music maestro Thomas Mapfumo, mbira songstress Chiwoniso Maraire and Afro-pop veteran Oliver “Tuku” Mtkukudzi jam in Johannesburg at a gig dubbed Zim-Za this weekend. Mapfumo, now based in the United States, has just released a new album aptly titled Exile. Maraire divides her time between the US (where she spent the formative years of her life with her mbira pedagogue father) and her native Zimbabwe, and the legendary Tuku is a regular on local stages.

? British alternative rock outfit Coldplay has won many awards, including six Brit Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards and seven Grammys, and it has also sold tens of millions of CDs. Signature albums include the 2002 offering, A Rush of Blood to the Head, and its 2008 CD, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends.
