Jo’burg music picks: October 21 2011

Two restaurant gigs this week offer music for the hungry.

? Melville’s Lucky Bean restaurant serves reliable chow and its casual decor, with couches spilling on to the sidewalk, provides a relaxing backdrop to an evening of aural stimulation.

This month the venue presents Adam Glasser, a virtuoso musician from London, supported by some well-known musical heads. Originally from South Africa and now based in London, harmonica virtuoso Glasser has performed with Joe Zawinul, Sting, the Eurythmics and Incognito Blue. The gigs mark the launch of his new album titled Mzansi.

Lucky Bean, 16 Seventh Street, Melville, on October 23 and 30 at 7pm. To book, phone: 011 482 5572. To view the menu, visit: www.luckybeanrestaurant.co.za.

? New-age guitar stalwarts Tony Cox and Steve Newman have been playing together since before your auntie was born. Now branded the Road Warriors, last year these two string wizards launched a year-long celebration of three decades of collaboration. They started with a run at Cape Town’s Baxter Theatre, and then took in Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown. This weekend they touch down in squeaky-clean Bedfordview. Catch Cox and Newman at Olive’s Bistro fine-dining theatre and restaurant in tandem with a scrumptious three-course meal as part of the ticket price.

Olive’s Bistro, corner of Hawley and Van Buuren roads, Bedfordview, from Wednesday to Sunday until October 23 at 8pm. To book, call: 082 364 3626 or 082 218 3698.
