Wolves’ fight back denies Swansea

Wolves staged a dramatic late fight back to deny Swansea their first away win of the season on Saturday, scoring twice in the final six minutes to snatch a 2-2 draw at Molineux.

Swansea appeared to be cruising to victory after outplaying Wolves for much of an entertaining contest while taking a 2-0 lead through first-half goals from Danny Graham and Joe Allen.

But with Wolves’ sixth straight defeat looming, Mick McCarthy’s men somehow dragged themselves back into the contest and grabbed a draw with a goal from Kevin Doyle on 84 minutes before Jamie O’Hara’s 86th-minute leveller.

The result came as a relief to beleaguered Wolves boss McCarthy, who had seen his players booed after Swansea’s second goal and was subjected to angry taunts from home fans during the second half.

The defeat saw Wolves move two places up the table to 14th spot while Swansea moved up to 11th.

The writing had appeared to be on the wall for Wolves after Swansea’s club record signing Graham fired the newly promoted Welsh side ahead on 23 minutes.

Mark Gower clipped a pass over the top and when Wolves defender Roger Johnson failed to connect with an acrobatic attempted clearance, Graham was on hand to prod home his third league goal of the season.

It got worse for Wolves 12 minutes later when Swansea doubled their lead. This time Graham turned provider, drilling in a low cross from the right which Allen steered home to trigger a chorus of boos around Molineux.

McCarthy was subjected to taunts of “You don’t know what you’re doing” during the second half but ended up having the last laugh as his team battled back to a draw.

Doyle gave the side a lifeline when he jabbed home from close range following Sam Vokes shot six minutes from time, and two minutes later O’Hara levelled it when he swept in Doyle’s cross from the left. — AFP
