Watching drummer Tshepang Ramoba and guitarist/vocalist Linda Buthelezi in action as Post #, one is reminded of an early, ignorant complaint about the BLK JKS, which went something like “They don’t fucking seem to have any songs”.
Ramoba and Buthelezi are members of the BLK JKS, the band that built its reputation on experimentation and a general loose-limbed approach to live performance. Their performances often towered above their recorded material. Ramoba and Buthelezi contributed a great deal to that frenetic spirit and the forming of Post # couldn’t have come at a better time. The music skates a fine line between inspired genius and absurdity. Since June, Post # has gigged intermittently, and, to paraphrase Amiri Baraka, at their best, they have become a snapshot of the JKS “at their most un-conscious”.
Post # play at the Post Post Party at Shikisha, Newtown, on April 6 from 8pm, alongside DJ ID (NYC), DJ Danger Ingozi (SA) and QB Smith (UK). Cover charge: R50.
