Jazz singer Abigail Kubeka will perform some of her classics, taking fans back in time. Kubeka, who started her music career in 1957, is one of the musicians who has helped to keep the Sophiatown jazz sound alive. Two folk musicians will treat fans to a night of live music in their show Nakhane Touré and Bongeziwe Mabandla Live at the Bannister Hotel Basement. Touré broke into the music scene with his debut album Brave Confusion in 2013. Traditional African music, 1960s soul and 1970s jazz influenced his music. Pretoria

The first monthly outdoor live Park Acoustics concert of the year features BCUC, who will be headlining the show, Gazelle and InviZABLE, Sawagi from Japan and Tidal Waves. There will also be a comedy stage and Glen Bo, Lazola Gola and Kagiso KG Mokgadi will perform. Park Acoustics started in 2010 and was held in the Pretoria National Botanical Gardens, but it has grown since then. The atmosphere is casual and audiences can bring food for a picnic. The award-winning stage production Call Us Crazy was conceived in 1994 by Josias Moleele and has been reworked over the years. The first performance of the comedy was at the Market Theatre in 2000, and it won three FNB Vita awards. The 2015 take on it stars Tony Kgoroge, Moleele and Marietjie Bothma. It tells the story of “a disillusioned road construction worker, Oompie, whose mission is to tar all the roads in the world”. WHEN January 22 to February 1. WHERE South African State Theatre. Cape Town

Kirstenbosch has hosted some of South Africa’s finest music acts at its Summer Sunset Concerts. The latest act is alternative pop singer and South African Music Awards nominee Jimmy Nevis. He released his debut album Subliminal in 2012 and has since worked with musicians such as Mi Casa and Kwesta. WHEN January 25. WHERE Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. TIME Gates open at 4pm. Playwright and director David Kramer’s latest musical, Orpheus in Africa, tells the story of the “American impresario Orpheus McAdoo and his African-American Virginia Jubilee Singers, who visited South Africa in the 1890s. Their tour began in Scotland where Orpheus met Lady Loch, the wife of the British governor of the Cape, who invited them to Cape Town. It was here some 125 years ago that the Jubilee Singers became an unlikely overnight sensation.” Orpheus is played by tenor Aubrey Poo, who has appeared in musicals such as Marikana: The Musical and Ketekang. Orpheus’s fiancée Mattie Allen will be played by Lynelle Kenned, who appeared in the stage productions Blood Brothers and Showboat. WHEN January 28 until February 22. WHERE Fugard Theatre. Sasolburg

Acclaimed Belgian jazz musicians Dirk van der Linden and Jean van Lint will, for the first time, perform in South Africa – at the International Jazz from Europe concert. Van der Linden plays the Hammond organ and Van Lint is a singer and bass player. The two will form a quartet with saxophonist Justin Holcroft from the United Kingdom and South African jazz drummer Anthony Yoko.
