DURBAN, June 7 (ANA) – A huge explosion ripped through the Durban Christian Centre in Mayville in the city on Tuesday night.

According to police, the cause of the explosion and fire that tore through the Durban Christian Centre’s “Jesus Dome” was unknown at the time of going to print.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Nqobile Gwala said that police responded to the call of an explosion and were on scene along with other emergency services personnel.

“At this stage we cannot say what was the cause of the explosion and fire as the emergency teams are still battling the blaze,” said Gwala.

Firefighters and emergency services were battling the blaze which had engulfed the multi-million rand centre.

Eyewitnesses reported that they heard a massive explosion, followed by a thick cloud of smoke.

The centre, alongside the N3 highway, is one of the largest churches in Durban.
