Economist
Bogolo Joy Kenewendo is an internationally trained economist, media commentator and policy analyst.
She now works as a trade economist in the ministry of trade and industry in Ghana, and was previously employed as an economic consultant at Econsult Botswana.
Kenewendo holds an MSc in International Economics from the University of Sussex in the UK, and was a recipient of a prestigious Chevening Scholarship in 2012. She completed her BA in Economics at the University of Botswana.
While at the University of Botswana, Kenewendo studied abroad at Pitzer College in the US. She studied European Integration at Tor Vergata at the Jean Monnet international Summer School in Rome, Italy, and did Economic Freedom Philosophy at the Foundation for Economic Education.
Kenewendo is a certified Project Management PRINCE 2 practitioner. She worked part-time for the Council on International Educational Exchange, and as a student facilitator in the Office of International Education and Partnerships.
Kenewendo has experience in consultancy, research and policy analysis. Her areas of expertise include (among others): macroeconomic policy, export development, regulatory frameworks, poverty alleviation, financial sector development, the economics of HIV, climate change, as well as business advocacy and project management.
She has been an active advocate and adviser on socioeconomic issues, especially poverty and inequality, as well as youth and women participation in the labour market. She is also the founder of the Molaya Kgosi Trust, a youth and women leadership and mentorship initiative.
Kenewendo has led the execution of key projects and she chaired the youth sector of the President of Botswana’s High Level Consultative Council, addressing challenges faced by the private sector in Botswana.
Kenewendo drives economic education through her radio show The Multiplier Effect. As well as her regular newspaper column The Game Theory, she is also a frequent commentator for various media houses, both locally and internationally.
Kenewendo is an alumna of the United States President’s Young African Leaders Initiative, and was one of two Botswana youth delegates who attended the 64th and 65th Sessions of the United Nations General Assembly.
As part of this responsibility, Kenewendo was nominated to present a statement about African youth to then UN secretary general Ban Ki Moon. Kenewendo has been honoured with the Ten Outstanding Young Persons award by JCI Botswana in 2012.
