Premier Soccer League ready to go

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) season for 2004/05, scheduled from August 7, will start with a full complement of clubs in both the PSL and the Mvelaphanda Golden League, including the recently promoted clubs. PSL CEO Trevor Phillips confirmed the starting date for both leagues at a media briefing on Monday.

Chiefs dethroned by Sundowns

The new-look Sundowns dethroned defending Telkom Charity Cup Competition champions Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium near Soweto late on Saturday evening. It was a well-deserved victory under new coach Paul Dolezar and avenged the 1-0 defeat by Chiefs in last year’s final at the same venue.

Chiefs sweep Leopards aside

Defending champions Kaizer Chiefs swept Black Leopards aside 2-0 in the semifinal and booked a place in the final of the Telkom Charity Cup competition at the FNB Stadium on Saturday. AmaKhosi took the lead in the 35th minute via the golden boot of John ”Shoes” Moshoeu.

Nyanga ‘will melt from the heat’

Siyabonga ”Kid Chocolate” Nyanga ”will melt from the heat” turned on by Vus’Umuzi Malinga in a rematch for Malinga’s South African bantamweight title at the Soweto Community Hall in Orlando on Friday night. This stern warning was issued on Thursday by the champion’s father, Jabulani, who doubles as his trainer.

Safa payouts: ‘Why not R7,4-million?’

The South African Football Association’s (Safa) chief operation officer, Albert Mokoena, has justified a massive payout to the organisation’s president, Molefi Oliphant. Safa, which is in the red, will pay Irvin Khoza, Danny Jordaan and Oliphant a whopping R7,4-million each after tax for their role in the Soccer World Cup 2010 bid.

Orlando Pirates introduced Kosta Papic on Tuesday as the new head coach for the Buccaneers, who have not had a mentor since Roy Barretto left last October. The chairperson of Pirates, Dr Irvin Khoza, described Papic as a vastly experienced and knowledgeable manager of the modern game.

No luck for Chiefs

AS Vita Club from the Democratic Republic of Congo won the new Kudu Horn trophy and a whopping R1-million after defeating Kaizer Chiefs 4-3 on penalties at the FNB Stadium on Saturday. Chiefs, having won the Vodacom Challenge Cup three times since its launch five years ago, took home R500 000.

South African junior bantamweight champion Simon ”Dancing Shoes” Ramoni has dismissed weekend reports that he is avoiding Silence ”Real Deal” Mabuza. Instead the champion, who dethroned Mabuza’s stablemate Theo Modise on an 11th-round stoppage in May, has reiterated his desire to challenge the Springs-based IBO champion.

Luck of the draw for Soweto clubs

Two of Soweto’s big three clubs, Kaizer Chiefs and Moroka Swallows, will enjoy home-ground advantage against Black Leopards and Ajax Cape Town when the journey to the final of the SAA Supa 8 Cup begins on August 14. The Pretoria-based Supersport United and Wits University of Gauteng also won home-ground games.
