United States President George Bush was planning to announce on Monday he had chosen former federal judge Michael Mukasey as his nominee for Attorney General, the White House said. Mukasey (66) would replace Alberto Gonzales, who resigned last month.

United States President George Bush hopes to spur momentum for a world trade pact and a global target on climate change at this week’s Asia-Pacific summit but the Iraq debate at home looms as a distraction. Bush will meet in Sydney with the leaders of Australia, China, Japan, Russia and other members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) forum.
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown was expected to walk a fine line in talks on Monday with President George Bush, keeping some distance on issues like Iraq while preserving the ”special relationship” with the United States. The Camp David meeting is the first between the new British prime minister and Bush since Brown succeeded Tony Blair last month.
United States President George Bush said on Monday it was a high priority for the US to win the release of five Bulgarian nurses sentenced to death in Libya for infecting children with HIV. ”It’s a high priority for our country,” Bush said. ”Our hearts also go out to the children that have been infected by HIV and Aids.”

United States Vice President Dick Cheney on Friday expressed concerns about China’s military build-up and also questioned whether North Korea would follow through on its commitments in a recent nuclear deal. In a speech in Sydney, Cheney also stressed the importance of US forces remaining in Iraq to stop ”jihadists” gaining a base.

United States Vice-President Dick Cheney said on Wednesday the US wants to finish its mission in Iraq and ”return with honour”, despite the war’s growing unpopularity at home and doubts among US allies. Cheney’s visit to Tokyo comes just weeks after Japan’s defence minister said starting the Iraq war was a mistake.

Nato pledged on Wednesday to stay the course to restore peace and stability in Afghanistan at a summit where nations offered guarded concessions to improve the mobility of allied forces battling Taliban insurgents.
