Belgian political deal ends nine-month crisis

Belgian political parties announced on Tuesday they had reached a deal to form a new national government, ending a nine-month political stalemate that had threatened to split the country apart. Prime Minister-designate Yves Leterme, whose Flemish Christian Democrats won elections in June, announced the deal after all-night talks.

Feud over energy policy dominates summit

European Union leaders bluntly criticised Bolivia and Venezuela’s protectionist energy policies at summit talks of 58 European and Latin American leaders on Friday. Summit host Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel reminded the two countries that open markets were key to promoting economic growth and prosperity — a key issue at the meeting.

EU Constitution gets the nod

The European Parliament gave its overwhelming endorsement to the European Union’s first-ever Constitution on Wednesday and urged EU governments to follow suit. "This is an important moment in the history of the Parliament, and it is an important moment in Europe’s ratification of Europe’s Constitution," said Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker.
