Asylum seekers battle for residence in Netherlands

After 47 days on a hunger strike, Iranians Azita Aslami and Mohammad Mehdi Neshat may finally get what they want: a residence permit to stay in The Netherlands. The Dutch government says Iran is a safe country, but Aslami and Neshat don’t agree. On June 30, eight Iranian asylum seekers had embarked on a hunger strike to protest the Dutch asylum-seeking procedure.

Johannesburg: Tourist haven or nightmare?

Newspaper posters hang along the sides of Johannesburg’s roads, telling the latest horrifying news: babies raped and people slaughtered. Electric fences and armed-response signs surround many homes in the city. It’s no wonder that youngsters from other countries staying in the city’s backpackers’ hostels think they know all about South Africa’s crime rate.

UN works to protect children in armed conflict

The United Nations Security Council has established a monitoring and reporting mechanism that will ensure the protection of children exposed to armed conflict, a UN statement said on Wednesday. In the past decade, two million children have been killed in situations of armed conflict, while six million children have been disabled or injured.

Is Women’s Day just another day off?

On Tuesday, South Africans can celebrate National Women’s Day for the 11th time, in remembrance of the 20 000 women of all races who marched on August 9 1956 to the Union Buildings, to protest the extension of pass laws for African women. The Mail & Guardian Online asked some South Africans about the meaning of Women’s Day.

The Media Monitoring Project (MMP) is again challenging the South African media on their coverage of National Women’s Day. For the past six years, the MMP has monitored media coverage during the period around National Women’s Day. Last year’s challenge was won by the <i>Mail & Guardian</i>.
