From human-fat meatballs to a pink mountain

Last year, Chilean-born artist Marco Evaristti mixed fat removed from his body by liposuction with ground beef to make meatballs, which he fried in olive oil and displayed in a public gallery. This year, he plans to climb Western Europe’s highest mountain colour the summit pink and declare it an independent state, with himself as president.

Annan to see south Lebanon destruction

United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan will see the destruction in southern Lebanon at first hand on Tuesday when he visits the area during a Middle East tour designed to cement a truce between Israel and Hezbollah. On the first stop of his tour, Annan issued a warning in Beirut on Monday that all sides must fully implement UN Security Council resolution 1701 or face a possible new war.

Annan to shore up Lebanon truce

United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan will discuss the deployment and role of a planned 15 000-strong peacekeeping force for southern Lebanon when he visits Beirut on Monday. Other issues are likely to include the lifting of an Israeli air and sea blockade of Lebanon, policing of the Lebanese-Syrian border to stop arms smuggling and a possible prisoner swap.

Lebanese oil slick hits ancient Phoenician port

The Lebanese port of Byblos has survived the Romans, the Crusades and the armies of Alexander the Great but now it faces a 21st-century menace, brought to its shores on a tide of war — oil pollution. A slick caused by Israel’s bombardment of a power plant last month during its conflict with Hezbolla guerrillas has spewed a black tide along a 140km stretch of the coastline.

Bush: Lebanon needs UN troops urgently

United States President George Bush called on Monday for the urgent deployment of a United Nations peacekeeping force to southern Lebanon to shore up a week-old truce between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas. He said there will be another UN resolution on the rules for such a force. ”First things first will be to get the rules of engagement clear,” he told a news conference in Washington.

Mideast truce ‘very fragile’, Merkel warns

German Chancellor Angela Merkel described the situation in Lebanon as ”very fragile” on Monday as a truce between Israel and Lebanese Hezbollah guerrillas entered its second week. Merkel said it was vital to get United Nations peacekeeping troops to the area quickly to prevent a rekindling of the conflict, in which nearly 1 200 people in Lebanon and 157 Israelis died.
