The government’s reaction to the heated national debate on crime is expected to be high on President Thabo Mbeki’s agenda during his State of the Nation address on Friday morning. Power cuts rippled across South Africa on Thursday, blacking out parts of major cities and spurring warnings from state utility Eskom that unexpected shortages could extend into next week. The cuts, which Eskom attributed to power-station maintenance and the shutdown of one unit at Koeberg, caused power failures stretching from Cape Town to Johannesburg.

Frustrated South African consumers, led by the Telecommunications Action Group (TAG), will on Friday publish a full-page advert in the <i>Mail & Guardian</i> newspaper calling for the reform of the telecommunications sector in the country. "We took this action because as consumers we are tired … of the poor service," TAG founder Alastair Otter said on Tuesday.

South African politicians paid tribute on Wednesday to former president PW Botha, who died on Tuesday night at his home in the Western Cape. Messages were received from President Thabo Mbeki, former presidents FW de Klerk and Nelson Mandela, former parliamentarian Helen Suzman and many others.
Thursday saw the long-awaited launch of South Africa’s second national operator — to be known as Neotel — at a function in Kyalami, north of Johannesburg, that featured violinists, African dance and a mime artist. Neotel MD Pandey outlined the company’s planned roll-out of telecommunication services.
The revelation that the official opposition Democratic Alliance allegedly received a donation from slain businessman Brett Kebble points to the need for serious reform in the party political funding regime in South Africa, says Independent Democrats MP Lance Greyling.
The new R55-million Baramall shopping centre was officially launched in Soweto on Wednesday. The centre is fully let and anchor tenants include Shoprite, OK Furnishers, Jet Stores, PEP Stores, Diskom and Dunns, while financial institutions include Absa, African Bank, First National Bank and Standard Bank.
Several South African municipalities are looking at offering telecommunications services as a service to residents or have already begun to do so, says Dr Andrew Hutchison, T-Systems South Africa’s business manager for telecommunications. This trend has immense potential to help the country bridge its digital gaps.
