Romney, McCain debate jobs in depressed Michigan

Republican rivals Mitt Romney and John McCain clashed on Saturday over how to revive the depressed economy of Michigan, as the most open United States presidential race in decades approached its next big test. Romney needs to win the Republican primary here on Tuesday after losing Iowa to former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee and New Hampshire to McCain.

US soldiers battle to re-enter everyday life

Retired United States Navy medic Charlie Anderson twice thought about committing suicide: once when he feared he would be sent back to Iraq in 2004 and again last year when a friend and fellow veteran killed himself. ”I can’t say that I can’t go because we don’t do that; I also can’t go because I’m putting people in danger if I do,” he said of his first brush with suicidal thoughts.

Pallets of US cash sent to Baghdad before handover

The United States Federal Reserve sent record payouts of more than -billion in cash to Baghdad on giant pallets aboard military planes shortly before the US gave control back to Iraqis. The money came from Iraqi oil exports, surplus dollars from the United Nations-run oil-for-food programme and frozen assets belonging to the ousted Saddam Hussein regime.

Bush: Saddam execution ‘important milestone’

United States President George Bush said on Friday the execution of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was an important milestone on the country’s path to democracy. ”Bringing Saddam Hussein to justice will not end the violence in Iraq, but it is an important milestone on Iraq’s course to becoming a democracy that can govern, sustain, and defend itself,” Bush said in a statement.
