Court orders journalist to testify

The battle for media freedom took another knock last week when the Cape Town High Court denied journalist Gasant Abarder’s right to appeal against an order to testify in a civil defamation case. Abarder had been subpoenaed to testify in a civil defamation dispute between two private litigants.

Bakwena regent back on throne

Deposed Bakwena ba Mogopa regent Emmanuel Segwagwa Mamogale will reassume his position at the helm of the platinum-rich tribe after successfully challenging last year’s decision by North West Premier Edna Molewa to relieve him of his duties. Motlalepule Mathibedi, who had replaced Mamogale, recently signed a mining deal worth R1,9-billion with African Platinum on behalf of the tribe.

Ivory sale ban irks SA

The department of environmental affairs and tourism has slammed the decision by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species to suspend the sale of 60 tons of stockpiled ivory held by South Africa, Botswana and Namibia, arguing that it would not trigger an increase in poaching.

Too many patients, too few staff

Savera Mohangi, acting CEO of the embattled Rob Ferreira Hospital in Nelspruit, refused to speak to the <i>M&G</i> unless provincial department of health spokesperson Mpho Gabashane was present. Her reticence is understandable, given that a spate of resig­nations in the past three months has further crippled this already incapacitated tertiary hospital, rated one of the five worst in the country by local newspaper <i>The Lowvelder</i>.

Cops can’t police private lives

The prevalence of interpersonal violent crime in South Africa cannot be blamed on inadequate policing, law enforcement analysts said this week, after the Department of Safety and Security released the latest crime statistics. Antony Altbeker, a crime specialist and author of a recent book on the South African Police Service, said the problem has ”next to nothing to do with the inadequate policing” but a lot to do with poor human relationships.

Rita Marley uses Tutu’s name in vain

Rita Marley, the widow of late reggae musician Bob Marley, has been falsely using the name of Archbishop Desmond Tutu to garner publicity for a series of concerts she hopes to hold in the country early next year to commemorate the birth of her husband. The Africa Unite programme will be staged in Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg.
