Two opposition parties have urged police National Commissioner Jackie Selebi to quit after the arrest for murder of his associate Glenn Agliotti. The Freedom Front Plus and the Democratic Alliance said on Thursday that Selebi’s links with the man arrested in connection with the killing of Brett Kebble should be investigated.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on Monday distanced itself from a <i>Sunday Times</i> report that the Scorpions were in possession of a diary linking police National Commissioner Jackie Selebi to Glenn Agliotti. Spokesperson Makhosini Nkosi said the report was written in a "dishonest way".

President Thabo Mbeki on Thursday dismissed calls for a commission of inquiry into allegations against police National Commissioner Jackie Selebi. Mbeki wrote a letter to a Freedom Front Plus MP in response to requests by that party last week for an inquiry to investigate allegations that Selebi was involved in criminal activities.

Public Protector Mabedla Lawrence Mushwana has found that a R65Â 000 interest-free loan paid by Sandi Majali, of Imvume Investments, to Minister of Social Development Zola Skweyiya’s wife for renovations on Skweyiya’s Waterkloof home did not influence the awarding of a multimillion-rand contract to a company partly owned by Imvume.

The Director General of Correctional Services, Linda Mti, has resigned, a government statement said on Thursday. It said the national commissioner quit at the beginning of the month. Johannesburg police on Tuesday confirmed that Mti had recently been arrested for drunken driving.

A nuclear reactor at Koeberg in Cape Town automatically shut down on Sunday night but risk of power interruption was minimal, Eskom said on Monday. "The initial indication is that the fault is on the turbine control system, which is currently being investigated," it said in a statement.
