‘Offensive’ hostel name at UFS to be changed

The council of the University of the Free State (UFS), which after eleven years of democracy still practises segregation in its student hostels, said the name change of a hostel for white men, named ”Verwoerd”, is a priority and will be finalised in June. The Mail & Guardian on February 17 reported that the university’s student hostels were still racially segregated.

Vodacom to reduce 3G tariffs

Vodacom is reducing its 3G data tariffs by 20% from June 1, subject to the approval of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa, the company said in a statement on Tuesday. Pieter Uys, Vodacom’s CEO said: "This reduction in tariffs means that Vodacom customers could pay as little as 39c per megabyte — making our superfast mobile internet even more affordable and accessible to everyone."

Goldin, Bloom murder accused back in court

The first three men arrested in connection with the murder of actor Brett Goldin and his friend Richard Bloom, a fashion-production manager, appeared in the Cape Town magistrate’s court on Friday. It was their second court appearance. The men are charged with possession of stolen property — a credit card and items of clothing belonging to the two victims.

Vodacom announces free 3G upgrades for SA

Customers using Vodacom’s 3G data-connect card can upgrade to the new 3G HSDPA (high-speed downlink packet access) for free from April 21, the company said on Thursday. Any customer who owns a locally purchased Vodacom 3G data-connect card may swap their card at any Vodacom approved outlet for a 3G HSDPA, on condition that they produce a proof of original purchase in South Africa.

New vaginal gel ‘can kill HIV cells’

A major breakthrough in the fight against the HIV/Aids epidemic may be likely as research into a revolutionary new type of technology, known as microbicides, gains momentum. Professor Helen Rees of the Reproductive Health and HIV Research Unit at the University of the Witwatersrand said in a statement to the media that microbicides are crucial in reducing the spread of HIV/Aids.

New arrests in Crazy Monkey murders

Two more suspects have been arrested in connection with the double murder of actor Brett Goldin — who starred in the comedy Crazy Monkey Presents Straight Outta Benoni — and designer Richard Bloom on Wednesday, the Western Cape police said. A pistol, in the two suspects’ possession, was also seized.

Of paper planes and aviation aspirations

Building a paper airplane and thrusting it into the air is probably something everyone has done before. But for three South African aspiring pilots, their featherweight gliders have landed them a position to compete in the first international Red Bull Paper Wings competition in Salzburg, Austria in May this year. South Africa will join 48 countries in the first-ever paper-plane competition.

The South African National Editors Forum (Sanef) has endorsed a statement condemning the rising incidence of media repression in five African countries earlier this week. The fourth African Media Leadership Conference held in Nairobi, Kenya from April 4-7, was attended by leading media executives and editors from 12 African countries.

Streetfootball World Cup, here we come!

”The only South African representation at the Soccer World Cup will be the street-football team in the [Streetfootball] World Cup,” said Klemens Hubert, South African director of the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ). An invitation to participate in the first-ever Streetfootball World Cup was extended to the Gauteng North Sport Council (GNSC) last month, in collaboration with GTZ.
