The Minority Front (MF) will only accept responsibility "for the conduct" of its member responsible for writing an MF advertorial described as "racist", said party leader Amichand Rajbansi on Friday. The controversial MF advertorial was published in the <i>Durban Chatsworth Tabloid</i>.

A kaleidoscope of white butterflies, like cherry blossoms, have been wafting over Johannesburg this week, caused by the recent rains. Professor Graham Alexander, a zoology lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand, said the butterflies, commonly known as the "brown-veined white" or <i>Belenois aurota aurota</i>, take wing when their population level rises.

The publication of Nova, the four-and-a-half-month-old daily newspaper from the Media24 stable based in Johannesburg, is to be suspended, a statement from Red Ink Publishing on behalf of Nova said on Wednesday. Nova was aimed at young, high-income urban professionals.

Readers in the Mail & Guardian Online‘s discussion forums have been sharply divided in the past week regarding the world’s reactions to the cartoons of the prophet Muhammad that first appeared in a Danish newspaper last year. Despite laws governing fireworks in South Africa, licensed wholesale dealers abuse the system and illegally sell fireworks to hawkers. "Street hawkers easily get access to fireworks by purchasing a limited quantity for [their] own use from a retail dealer, and then illegally sell it to passers-by," says a police spokesperson.

MultiChoice said on Tuesday it would welcome competition after the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) announced that it would be inviting applications for a subscription broadcast licence at the end of the month. South Africa’s newest search engine, Jonga, is back on Google’s index after disappearing from it for a week without any explanation. Alistair Carruthers, Jonga’s owner, told the <i>Mail & Guardian Online</i> on Friday that Jonga was officially back on Google’s index at 8pm on Thursday night.
