The Mail & Guardian Online on Saturday confirmed that former Sunday Times editor Mathatha Tsedu has accepted the editorship of the weekly City Press newspaper. Tsedu was dismissed from the Sunday Times after being accused of underperformance.

South African Football Association deputy president Irvin Khoza — better known to some at the Iron Duke of soccer — has resigned from all his posts at the organisation with immediate effect. In a statement issued on Tuesday, Khoza said: ”I am tired of being used as a scapegoat.”

More women than men registered to vote during the voter registration drive of January 24 and 25, and 18- to 25-year-olds proved those accusing them of apathy at least partly wrong. The Independent Electoral Commission on Thursday announced the results of the country’s second voter registration weekend.

Four South Africans were injured and one was killed in a car bomb in Baghdad in Iraq on Wednesday morning, the Department of Foreign Affairs said. Departmental spokesperson Nomfanelo Kota said three of the injured men were treated for minor lacerations and the fourth one sustained serious injuries.

A South African has reportedly been killed in a suicide car bombing at a Baghdad hotel in Iraq early on Wednesday. At least three other people also died in the blast. The bomb exploded in front of the Shaheen hotel, which is frequented by Westerners, and destroyed the front of the hotel building.

The <i>Mail & Guardian Online</i> was on Tuesday hit by a new e-mail worm that is quickly spreading around the world. The worm, called Bagle or Beagle, was sent via the <i>M&G Online</i>’s newsletter list. It spread rapidly over the weekend, with several security firms issuing bulletins on it on Monday.

A statement issued by the African National Congress in KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday claimed that the ANC had been informed by "reliable sources at Ulundi" that there will be a "stage-managed so-called defection of (bogus) ANC members to the IFP [Inkatha Freedom Party] tomorrow (Sunday) at its (IFP) manifesto launch at Lindelani in Durban".

Reports on Thursday said Bafana Bafana coach Ephraim ”Shakes” Mashaba, who was suspended last Wednesday, has been fired by the South African Football Association. Mashaba’s dismissal came as he was fighting his suspension — which he claims was ”unlawful” — in the Johannesburg High Court.
