South African Afro-fusion band Freshlyground walked away with an MTV Europe Music Award on Thursday evening for best African act. Singer Zolani Mahola, looking slightly overwhelmed, accepted the award on stage with a brief thank-you message. Held in a chilly Copenhagen, Denmark, the glitzy awards were hosted by Justin Timberlake.

The <i>Mail & Guardian</i> has again been rewarded for its coverage of the Oilgate scandal. <i>M&G</i> journalists Stefaans Brümmer and Sam Sole, together with former staffer Wisani wa ka Ngobeni, share this year’s prestigious Vodacom Journalist of the Year Award with <i>Personal Finance</i>’s Bruce Cameron, it was announced on Sunday evening.

South African singer Lebo Mathosa (29) died in an accident east of Johannesburg in the early hours on Monday, her manager, Linzy Cowley, said. Mathosa’s driver apparently lost control of the Toyota Prado in which they were travelling on the N3 highway on the East Rand, and Mathosa died at the scene.
