The recent water shortage at Gauteng’s Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital is over after repairs were made to a burst water pipe. Some sections, including the entire theatre block, at the large Soweto hospital had been without water since last week Wednesday.

A controversial document criticising Britain over the crisis in Zimbabwe, which was leaked at a Southern African regional summit last month, came from Harare, not South Africa, a senior Zambian official said on Wednesday. Media reports said South Africa blamed Britain for the deepening crisis in Zimbabwe.

A powerful earthquake struck near Indonesia’s Sumatra island on Wednesday, the United States Geological Survey said, and the shock was felt across South-East Asia. A tsunami warning was issued by several Indian Ocean countries. Several buildings in Padang, the provincial capital of Indonesia’s West Sumatra, collapsed, Global TV reported.

Sections of Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital in Johannesburg have been without water for nearly a week, media reports said on Tuesday. This has resulted in theatres being closed, several toilets out of order and, according to one specialist surgeon, the hygiene of patients being compromised.

The Merafong municipality has warned that urgent action is needed to save Khutsong from a potential sinkhole disaster. Residents live in fear of repetition of the August 3 1964 disaster in which 376 miners and a family of five disappeared into a sinkhole in Carletonville and were never found again.

The South African National Editors’ Forum will seek a meeting with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) over a letter announcing that the broadcaster had broken ties with the forum, apparently over its stance regarding the publication of Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang’s medical records.

Businessman Cyril Ramaphosa has joined the African National Congress (ANC) presidential succession race, according to weekend media reports. The ANC’s powerful OR Tambo district in the Eastern Cape has formally stated that it will nominate Ramaphosa for the presidency. Regional secretary Mlamli Siyakholwa said that "we have been lobbying Ramaphosa, I must admit".
They have fought over Zimbabwe’s best farms, and now senior figures in Zanu-PF are limbering up for a new battle — this time over an array of foreign assets that will be put up for sale with the enactment of a controversial new empowerment law. Zimbabwe’s Empowerment Minister, Paul Mangwana, has tabled the proposed legislation before Parliament and expects to push it through within the next two weeks.
Mystery surrounds the reported discovery of what might be the largest diamond in the world. The stone, found in an unnamed North West mine, is believed to be twice the size of the world’s biggest, the Cullinan. A spokesperson for the mining company that made the discovery said the stone was excavated on Monday.
