Winnie Madikizela-Mandela said she will this week launch a last-minute bid to broker a truce between African National Congress (ANC) president Thabo Mbeki and his deputy, Jacob Zuma, a media report said on Sunday. Madikizela-Mandela said she was “deeply hurt” by the divisions in the ANC.

Nationwide’s aircraft will remain grounded until the airline has fixed deficiencies in its maintenance section, the South African Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said on Friday. The CAA suspended approval for the airline’s aircraft maintenance organisation from midnight on Thursday, said CAA chief executive officer Zakes Myeza.

United States television magnate Oprah Winfrey said on Monday that abuse charges at her all-girl academy in Johannesburg was one of the most devastating experiences in her life. ”This has been one of the most devastating, if not the most devastating, experiences of my life,” she said in a video news conference from Chicago.
Hannah Botha, one of South Africa’s veteran actors and a star of M-Net’s soap opera Egoli, has died at the age of 84. Botha died in Johannesburg on the morning of April 16, Beeld newspaper reported. She was admitted to hospital at the weekend as she was not feeling well.

South Africa’s ailing Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang has been temporarily replaced by the transport minister while she receives treatment for a lung condition, an official statement said. Tshabalala-Msimang, often criticised by Aids activists, entered hospital last week with anaemia and fluid collecting near the lung.

Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang has been admitted to the intensive-care unit of the Johannesburg General Hospital. According to media reports on Thursday, she is on a ventilator. She was admitted to the same hospital last year for several weeks after reportedly suffering from a lung infection.

A significant satirist especially in the 1970s, Kirby also worked as a broadcaster, television columnist, playwright and novelist. He became famous in South Africa for his sharp wit and fearless satire.
