Mauritius’ growth beats that of the world

The growth outlook for Mauritius, which is forecast between 5,3% and 5,5% in 2004, is more positive than the outlook for global growth, Standard Bank noted in a research brief on the country on Thursday. The bank noted the International Monetary Fund forecast that the global economy is expected to grow by 4,6% in 2004.

SA IT outsourcing market set to boom

Information technology (IT) outsourcing revenue will show a compound annual growth rate of 15% over the next five years to reach nearly R5,25-billion by 2006, according to a recent study. South Africa’s telecommunications infrastructure has been mentioned as a vital consideration.

Vodacom has not written off Nigeria

South African largest mobile communications group, Vodacom, on Monday said it has not written-off the possibility of investing in Africa’s most populous country, Nigeria. Speaking after the release of the company’s annual results, Vodacom CEO Alan Knott-Craig alluded to the fact that Nigeria provides excellent growth opportunities.

Cape Town internet goes wireless

Cape Town has switched on to MyWireless technology — or broadband wireless high-speed, no-limit internet access via regulated high-powered radio frequency — Sentech said in a statement on Thursday. Sentech, a state-owned but commercially run TV and radio signal distributor, launched MyWireless in Gauteng in January.

Gautrain is coming

One of Africa’s largest transportation projects, Gautrain, is making good progress and will be completed by 2010 when the Soccer World Cup is hosted by South Africa, Gautrain spokesperson Dr Barbara Jensen said on Tuesday. Gautrain will link Pretoria and Johannesburg with the Johannesburg International airport through Sandton.

Online thieves go phishing

The most targeted sectors for "phishing" attacks continue to be the financial services, online retail and internet service provider sectors, according to information technology law specialist Pravesh Singh. Phishing uses fraudulent e-mail messages to gain personal information for purposes of identity theft.

Watch out for those e-mails

With the current legal loopholes that exist around electronic communication companies should be more vigilant and prevent undue liabilities. E-mail recipients could sue companies if an employee sends or forwards a virus-infected e-mail, Cape Town-based law firm Jan S de Villiers warns.
