Cape Town internet goes wireless

Cape Town has switched on to MyWireless technology — or broadband wireless high-speed, no-limit internet access via regulated high-powered radio frequency — Sentech said in a statement on Thursday.

Sentech, a state-owned but commercially run TV and radio signal distributor, launched MyWireless in Gauteng in January, with Durban following in February and Cape Town getting its turn on Thursday.

MyWireless enables users to connect to the internet over the air at high speed, instead of relying on “traditional telephone lines”. This allows the new technology’s subscribers to use their internet connections on portable or fixed devices from any location within the coverage area.

Sentech portfolio manager of broadband products Winston Smith said: “MyWireless is a contended service, configured to obtain the most efficient access to the internet or e-mail at the same time, via one network.

“Subscribers are not charged additional fees based on the volumes of information they send or receive or on the time which is spent surfing the internet. There is no cap on bandwidth used in any specific package.”

“We are seeing excellent take-up of MyWireless in Gauteng and Durban and we expect it to be just as popular in Cape Town,” he added. — I-Net Bridge
