Six world powers meet on Friday to discuss imposing a third round of sanctions on Iran because of its refusal to stop enriching uranium, which they suspect could be used to build nuclear weapons. Talks among top officials from the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council plus Germany were due to start in the morning and last several hours.

President Robert Mugabe’s attempts to control prices amid Zimbabwe’s worsening economic crisis have backfired and now even the black market faces shortages, a senior British diplomatic source said on Wednesday. Under Mugabe’s 27-year rule, Zimbabwe has plunged from prosperity to penury.

Former Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif was arrested and deported to Saudi Arabia on Monday within hours of arriving home from exile, vowing to end the rule of President Pervez Musharraf. While with the deportation Musharraf has fended off the immediate challenge from a rival, the president is likely to face a backlash from many Pakistanis.
Gordon Brown replaced Tony Blair as Britain’s Prime Minister on Wednesday and promised changes after a decade of Labour Party rule marred by a lack of trust in the government since the Iraq war. On an emotional day, Blair went to Buckingham Palace to tender his resignation to Queen Elizabeth.
Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe risks the same fate as former Liberian President Charles Taylor, who is on trial for crimes against humanity, a British Foreign Office minister said on Monday. Taylor is the first ousted African president to stand trial at a United Nations-backed court for war crimes.
The two potential challengers to Gordon Brown for the Labour Party leadership decided on Monday to join forces in a bid to ensure there is a contest to succeed Prime Minister Tony Blair. Left-wing Labour MP Michael Meacher agreed to stand aside in favour of fellow left-winger John McDonnell after both struggled to get the 45 nominations necessary to make it on to the ballot.

Britain’s Tony Blair was quizzed as a witness on Thursday by police probing claims that political parties awarded state honours in return for loans. Analysts said it was a fresh embarrassment for a damaged prime minister. Blair was not cautioned by police about his rights before the interview, suggesting officers do not believe he has charges to answer.
