World number one Roger Federer defeated retired United States legend Pete Sampras on Thursday for the second straight time in three days at an exhibition match in Kuala Lumpur. Both men held serve to take the first set to a tie-break, with the Swiss maestro inching ahead when Sampras hit a forehand into the net.

Bodybuilder Reg Park dies in Johannesburg

International bodybuilding legend Reg Park (79) passed away in Johannesburg on November 22 from advanced skin cancer. ”In his dying moments he was talking in his sleep and training people and exercising them,” his son, Jon Jon, said. Jon Jon said Reg had suffered with the debilitating illness for eight months but had accepted that he was going to die.

Fresh riots break out in Dakar

Sporadic riots broke out in the Senegalese capital on Thursday against a ban on street hawking the day after one of the country’s most violent protests in recent decades. Police said at least 200 people have been arrested following violent protests that rocked the otherwise stable West African country on Wednesday.

Strong earthquake hits Papua New Guinea

A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6,7 rocked eastern Papua New Guinea on Thursday, causing some damage and plunging parts of the coastal city of Lae into darkness, officials and witnesses said. The quake hit just before 6.48pm local time with the epicentre about 400km north of the capital, Port Moresby.

Hoskins: I stood by Jake White

South African rugby boss Oregan Hoskins says he played a key role in helping outgoing Springbok coach Jake White survive his four-year tenure. Without his support, Hoskins said on Thursday, White would not have been able to continue in his role as coach of the national side. ”All I want to say is that my conscience is abundantly clear towards Jake. I’ve stood by Jake.”
