A crowd of children is at play in the front garden of Thelma Mabuza’s small house in Zondi, Soweto. Mabuza is on her way to the tap located at the back of her yard. Johannesburg city bosses have decreed, through "Operation Gcina’manzi", that householders have to make do with 6 000 litres of free water a month.

The fourth season of South African <i>Idols</i>, which ended on Sunday night, saw the youngest winner yet scoop the title. Jody Williams (17) from Cape Town out-sang her home girl Andriette Norman in a two-hour special, broadcast live on pay-TV channel M-Net.

Tourism officials said this week it is ”business as usual” after severe floods hit the South Africa’s southern coast. ”Although the damage to property has been significant, the fact that the floods took place before the official start of the holiday season could prevent huge economic losses for the tourism sector,” said a tourism spokesperson.

The national office of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) in Harrison Street, Johannesburg, was damaged by a fire on Wednesday, CCMA director Nerine Kahn said on Thursday. Kahn told the Mail & Guardian Online that the cause of the fire was not known.

Hundreds of ecstatic rugby supporters are set to throng the arrivals hall at OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday morning when the Springboks bring the Webb Ellis trophy home. The newly crowned world champions will be arriving from France on Tuesday at about 6.50am.
One year into the construction of railways of South Africa’s first partly underground express train, the focus is on the completion of routes that are crucial for the 2010 Soccer World Cup. Transport Minister Jeff Radebe visited the sites of the Johannesburg and Rosebank rail tracks and stations on Wednesday.
