Smith: IPL could be real boon to world game

The money-spinning Indian Premier League (IPL) could boost cricket around the world but organisers had to ensure there was as little overlap with internationals as possible, said South Africa’s Graeme Smith. ”Scheduling is obviously going to be the key for the IPL,” the South African captain told reporters in Dhaka on Friday.

Gunman kills five, then himself at Illinois college

A black-clad man fired into a lecture hall packed with students at an Illinois university on Thursday, killing five people and wounding 18 before shooting himself dead, police and college officials said. The gunman stepped onto the lecturer’s stage near the end of a mid-afternoon geology class at Northern Illinois University and began shooting down the room.

Auction nets over $40-million for Aids in Africa

Art collectors opened their wallets on Thursday and shelled out ,6-million at a Valentine’s Day charity auction spearheaded by rocker Bono and British artist Damien Hirst to benefit the fight against HIV/Aids in Africa. Spirited bidding and prices far in excess of pre-sale estimates marked ”The (Red) Auction” at Sotheby’s, where all but one of the 83 contemporary works found buyers.

As with other electricity users in this country, I pay a levy on my usage to fund demand side management (DSM) programmes, intended to reduce overall ­electricity consumption. I was keen to get some of this money back in the form of the new incentive or subsidy available via Eskom to promote the use of solar water heaters, writes Kevin Davie.
