An Ariane-5 rocket blasted off from French Guiana on Friday putting into orbit telecommunications satellites for Africa and North America, space officials said. Rascom, a 3,2 tonne satellite for the Regional African Satellite Communication Organisation, is slated to serve the rural African market overlooked by major commercial operators.

Smokers in France are enjoying their last leisurely puffs on a cigarette over coffee or a glass of rouge before café, restaurants and nightclubs join a nationwide ban on smoking on January 1. Eleven months after smoking was outlawed in workplaces, schools, hospitals and shops, the ban is extending to bars and bistros.

The resolution on climate change adopted in Polokwane by the African National Congress (ANC) is a critical milestone that should be applauded, Marthinus van Schalkwyk, Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, said on Sunday. He said the resolution strengthened the mandate of the government to ”take the tough decisions that will be required”.
