Our media are in a muddle. Like Thabo Mbeki, they missed the groundswell ANC support for Jacob Zuma. Yet the focus on the split in the party has been more than verified. Those ostriches in the ruling party who pilloried the press for ”inventing divisions” have been shown up as having been in denial.

Time magazine named Russian President Vladimir Putin its person of the year for 2007 on Wednesday, saying he had returned his country from chaos to ”the table of world power” though at a cost to democratic principles. ”He’s not a good guy, but he’s done extraordinary things,” said Time managing editor Richard Stengel.

Australia’s bowlers backed up captain Ricky Ponting’s second successive one-day international century to lead their side to a 114-run win and series victory against New Zealand in Hobart on Thursday. Ponting, who made 107 not out in Australia’s seven-wicket victory in the first game in Adelaide, struck an unbeaten 134.

Zimbabwe’s top banker announced on Wednesday the immediate introduction of higher denominations of banknotes in a bid to tackle cash shortages fed by runaway inflation. With effect from Thursday, Z 000, Z 000 and Z 000 notes will come into circulation.

While welcoming the outcome of Tuesday night’s election of Jacob Zuma as African National Congress leader, the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) has come out against the notion of President Thabo Mbeki stepping down as the country’s president before 2009. Zuma’s victory should not be a signal for revenge or retribution, the ANC’s alliance partners said.

Gold is on course to close 2007 at least $100 higher, setting the yellow metal up for its seventh consecutive year of gains in 2008. An ounce of gold cost $629,80 at the start of 2007 and was trading close to $800 an ounce by mid-December after touching $841,10 in November –- its highest level since 1980.

Monkeys performed about as well as college students at mental addition, United States researchers said on Monday in a finding that suggests non-verbal maths skills are not unique to humans. The research follows the finding by Japanese researchers that young chimpanzees performed better than human adults at a memory game.
