Boks eliminated from Sevens series

Fiji won a semifinal of sheer quality against South Africa 21-12 to set up a replay of last weekend’s Dubai final against New Zealand in the International Rugby Board Sevens World Series in George on Saturday. In the other semifinal, Argentina tried to catch defending champions New Zealand off their guard.

Banyana keep hopes up for Beijing

Banyana Banyana soccer coach Augustine Makalakalane believes his side will turn the tables on Ghana by beating them in their own backyard and increase their chances of making it to the Beijing Olympics next year. UN fears for Congolese in conflict zone

United Nations peacekeepers expressed fears on Friday for tens of thousands of displaced people under threat in the latest conflict zone in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Goma, capital of the eastern province of Nord-Kivu, has been rocked by clashes between rebels led by renegade General Laurent Nkunda and army troops.

Niger journalists freed on defamation charge

Police in Niger have released two journalists held for allegedly defaming the country’s finance minister, but they still face prosecution, a press association said on Friday. ”The prosecutor has notified them that legal procedures will follow their normal course,” said Boubacar Diallo, of the Association of Independent Press Editors.

Powerful cyclone misses most of Fiji

A powerful cyclone packing winds of up to 250km/h pounded some small islands in northern Fiji, but missed heavily populated areas in the South Pacific nation as it swung away to the south-east, officials said on Saturday. Cyclone Daman remained a category-four storm, forecaster Daini Donu said, but it was weakening.

US man sues over condom in hamburger

A man who says he bit into a Burger King hamburger and found an unwrapped condom inside has sued the owner of the restaurant. Van Miguel Hartless (24), of Fair Haven, said on Friday he bought the Southwestern Whopper at a Burger King in Rutland on June 18 and made the discovery when he got home and started eating it.
