South Africa sealed their first Test series on the subcontinent since 2000 on Friday after being held to a draw by Pakistan in the second and final match. Pakistan, set a mammoth 457 to win, finished the final day on 316-4 with Younis Khan scoring a brilliant 130 while Mohammad Yousuf marked his return to the team with a stylish 63.

The United States should reconsider funding anti-HIV/Aids strategies in Uganda, where recipients of such money violate the rights of homosexuals, Human Rights Watch (HRW) has said. The watchdog group, in a letter to US officials on Thursday, said Ugandan officials and the media have intensified attacks on the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

New limits on catches of the endangered Patagonian toothfish, regarded as a culinary delicacy in Japan, have been imposed by a Namibia-based regional fishing organisation. Hashali Hamukuaya, executive of the South East Atlantic Fisheries Organisation, said its scientific committee had recommended the limit on the fish.

The United Nations secretary general is "deeply concerned" by the failure of the government and former rebels in Côte d’Ivoire to achieve steps toward peace. In his latest report on Côte d’Ivoire, released this week, Secretary General Ban Ki-moon says lagging progress is undermining the Ouagadougou peace accord.
