The scandal over a French group accused of trying to illegally fly African children from Chad to Europe will not affect the deployment of a European peace force in eastern Chad. France has troops stationed in Chad and will provide roughly half of a European Union peacekeeping force.

Buddhist monks in Burma staged a protest march on Wednesday, their first since soldiers crushed a pro-democracy uprising a month ago, as United Nations special envoy Ibrahim Gambari prepared for a return visit. Gambari, who first visited shortly after the army crackdown, would arrive on November 3.

A Spanish court will deliver verdicts on Wednesday on 28 people accused of playing a role in the 2004 Madrid train bombings, ending a politically charged trial into Europe’s deadliest al-Qaeda inspired attack. Ten bombs ripped through four commuter trains early on March 11 2004, strewing the tracks with bodies. The Islamist bombings killed 191 people and injured 1 800.

Crime and violence are a way of life in South Africa and, according to David Bruce of the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation, respect for justice and the law needs to be fostered. Bruce was speaking at a seminar on <i>The State of Criminal Justice: Building Respect for Justice and Human Rights</i> in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

Gold Fields announced on Wednesday that two employees lost their lives in the morning in an underground accident at the number four shaft of Kloof Gold Mine, near Westonaria. Two other mine employees were injured, one seriously. The four were part of a 10-man team working in a stope on 41 level, approximately 3Â 000m below surface.

Tropical Storm Noel weakened as it moved across Cuba on Tuesday, dumping torrential rain on already water-logged areas of the Caribbean island after killing at least 18 people in flashfloods and mudslides in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Double the average rainfall in October has already filled reservoirs in eastern Cuba to the brim and authorities are worried about flooding.

Broad-based price increases in South Africa’s economy showed there was a problem that needed to be ”handled”, Reserve Bank Governor Tito Mboweni said on Tuesday. Speaking in Johannesburg, he also warned that, in general, faster inflation meant tighter monetary policy.

United States warships are monitoring a Japanese tanker that was hijacked by pirates last weekend off the coast of Somalia. "The pirates are still in control of the ship. They are believed to be armed," Noel Choong, the head of the International Maritime Bureau’s Malaysia-based Piracy Reporting Centre, said.

Russian prosecutors labelled as a ”terrorist” act a bomb explosion that killed eight and injured more than 20 passengers in the city of Togliatti on Wednesday. They opened a criminal investigation into the attack, Russian news agencies reported, three hours after the early-morning explosion.
