UN: Violence is increasing in Darfur camps

Violence is increasing in camps for displaced people in Darfur, where nearly a quarter million people have been displaced so far this year, a United Nations report said on Monday. The United Nations said rising violence in the overcrowded camps of the remote region of western Sudan was making it harder to carry out humanitarian aid work.

Parties urge action on HIV-baby reports

As opposition parties called for urgent action to address the ”crisis” of HIV infection in babies attending state hospitals, the Health Department took steps on Monday to get to the bottom of the matter. The department was concerned at media reports ”alleging there have been cases of HIV infection as a result of inadequate infection-control measures”.

ANC denies interfering in SABC board selection

The African National Congress (ANC) on Monday dismissed as ”mischievous and fanciful” suggestions that it interfered in the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board-selection process. The Sunday Times reported that ANC headquarters had ordered the party’s MPs to accept a list of new SABC board appointees.

Bugging concerns at Boeremag trial

Defence counsel in the Boeremag treason trial on Monday complained bitterly that someone seemed to be listening in on their conversations during private consultations inside the courtroom. One of the defence advocates, Bernard Bantjes, said he had recently found out that private consultations, when the court was not sitting, were allegedly being recorded.

Four lions escape from Kruger park

Three lions which escaped from the Kruger National Park on Friday were still on the run, the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency said on Monday. Four lions escaped through a fence in the park on Friday and authorities had been notified by residents from the town of Emdlankomo in the Nelspruit area.

DA wants probe into Lotto bonuses

The Democratic Alliance (DA) on Monday lodged a complaint with the Public Services Commission over what it said were ”unjustified” performance bonuses being paid to National Lotteries Board (NLB) officials.
