The man known as Belgium’s ”king of jailbreaks” hit the country’s headlines on Monday as his gang staged a spectacular helicopter crash to help him break out of high-security prison for the fourth time. The escape of 27-year-old Nordin Benallal, a convict with a long history of violent crimes, was launched soon after sunset on Sunday.

The trial of a man accused of manufacturing and exporting components that may be used in the manufacture of nuclear weapons was postponed in the Pretoria High Court on Monday, South African Broadcasting Corporation news reported. Daniel Geiges’s trial was postponed to November 27.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert announced on Monday he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer requiring surgery but vowed to stay in office, confident of a full recovery. ”Following the results of a regular check-up, I was diagnosed with initial signs of prostate cancer,” the 62-year-old prime minister told a packed news conference in Jerusalem.

Former premier Benazir Bhutto on Monday wrapped up a visit to her ancestral home in southern Pakistan, hailing her supporters for defying security threats and promising them democracy. It was her first trip outside Karachi since twin suicide bombings on October 18 that targeted the two-time premier on her return from exile.

A pack of hunting dogs shot an Iowa man as he went to retrieve a fallen pheasant, authorities said. James Harris (37) was shot in the leg while hunting with some friends on Friday afternoon, a day before pheasant season officially opened. Harris was treated at a regional medical centre.

Environment ministers from 38 African countries met in Abuja, Nigeria, on Monday to discuss climate change and prepare for the United Nations global climate conference to be held on the island of Bali, Indonesia, in December. The Bali meeting is expected to produce a new global climate deal to curb carbon emissions.
