Google has introduced a long-promised video filtering system for its YouTube website. The system is designed to help owners of copyrighted videos crack down on pirated versions distributed over the video-sharing site. The tracking and identification system was developed in response to complaints by large media companies.

Indonesia warned on Tuesday that one of its most deadly volcanoes was poised to erupt and ordered nearly 30 000 villagers on the mountain’s slopes to evacuate. Mount Kelud, which has been rumbling for weeks, was placed on the highest alert level, meaning scientists believe a major eruption is imminent.

Mark Boucher and AB de Villiers hit quick-fire hundreds as South Africa tuned up for the one-day international series with a crushing 176-run win against Pakistan’s Patron’s XI on Tuesday. Boucher scored a 106-ball 103 while de Villiers raced to an unbeaten 113 off 95 balls as the tourists compiled 328-4 in just 45 overs at Bagh-e-Jinnah Stadium.

Eritrea has taken over from North Korea as the country in the world where press rights are least respected, the Paris-based campaigning group Reporters sans Frontières (RSF) said on Tuesday. North Korea and Turkmenistan are runners-up in RSF’s annual poll of shame of 169 countries.

The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) voiced concern on Tuesday over oil’s relentless rise towards $88 a barrel, but some members said the exporter group can do nothing more to control the rally. Opec agreed last month to raise production by 500 000 barrels per day from November 1.

One man died and another was left critically injured when three trucks collided on the N1 highway before the Golden Highway offramp on Tuesday afternoon, Johannesburg metro police said. Spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said two combination trucks and an eight-tonne truck were involved in the accident.

South African Reserve Bank Governor Tito Mboweni said on Tuesday that the bank expected inflation to peak in February 2008 and then gradually come back to the bank’s 3% to 6% target range. Mboweni said in a speech in Johannesburg that economic growth of above 4,5% was contributing to inflation.

Barriers affecting trade between countries in the southern hemisphere were much greater than those in the northern hemisphere, Minister of Trade and Industry Mandisi Mpahlwa said in Johannesburg on Tuesday. In addition, reducing trade tariffs in countries where industrial development was still under way ran the risk of exacerbating unemployment, he said.
