Monster hurricane moves in over Mexico

Hurricane Dean strengthened into a category-five storm capable of catastrophic damage on Monday night as its first rain and winds began hitting the coasts of Mexico and Belize. Thousands of tourists fled the beaches of the Mayan Riviera as the fast-moving storm roared toward the Yucatan Peninsula.

More apologies for Chikane

Two of the three apartheid police officers convicted last week of an attempt on Frank Chikane’s life 18 years ago visited him on Monday to ask him personally for forgiveness. Apartheid-era police head Johan van der Merwe, who with Adriaan Vlok received a suspended sentence of 10 years in jail, confirmed the meeting.

Santam reports solid increase in earnings

South African insurer Santam on Tuesday reported a 61% increase in headline earnings per share to 803 cents for the six months ended June from 498 cents a year ago. Diluted headline earnings per share were up 63% to 793 cents from a previous 488 cents. An interim dividend of 166 cents per share was declared.

Women make it their business

The percentage of women MBA students on campus at the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) has been steadily increasing since the first intake of students in the year 2000. “Our MBA programme is currently approximately 40% female, which is a most gratifying statistic for us,” said Shireen Chengadu, director of MBA programmes at GIBS.

Peers honour young Durban cosmologist

A Durban cosmologist, Dr Kavilan Moodley, has been awarded the prestigious Silver Jubilee Medal for 2007, by the South African Institute of Physics. The medal, awarded every two years to young researchers under the age of 35 years, was presented to Moodley at the opening event of the South African Institute of Physics’s 52nd annual conference, held last month at Wits University.

Research yields fishy solutions
