The suspension of South Africa’s National Director of Public Prosecutions amid silence by President Thabo Mbeki has led to concerns of government meddling in the country’s justice system. Mbeki’s integrity came under fire as his suspension of National Prosecuting Authority chief Vusi Pikoli was linked to the alleged pending arrest of police National Commissioner Jackie Selebi.

Peerless goalkicker Chris Paterson sent Scotland into the World Cup quarterfinals again when he landed six penalties to secure an 18-16 victory over Italy in a nervy, rain-affected Pool C showdown on Saturday. Paterson, who had landed nine out of nine conversions in Scotland’s first three games, continued his perfect return with six out of six penalties in St Etienne.

It was much tougher than she had bargained for but Venus Williams got the job done in the end, beating Russian Maria Kirilenko 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 in Sunday’s final of the WTA Korea Open in Seoul. It was the third singles title in 2007 for Williams, the reigning Wimbledon champion who was top seed here.

A homemade bomb exploded near a mosque in the Maldives’ capital, Male, on Saturday, wounding 12 foreign tourists, the islands’ government said. The blast occurred at the entrance to the capital’s Sultan Park, a popular stop-off for tour groups.

A strong earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 7,1 hit near the United States Pacific territory of Guam on Sunday, Japan’s Meteorological Agency said, but island media said there were no immediate reports of injuries. Guam’s Pacific Daily News said the quake could be felt in high-rise buildings on the island.

Fiji created the biggest shock of the World Cup so far with a sensational 38-34 win over Wales on Saturday to reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 1987.
