Woods seizes solid PGA lead

World number one Tiger Woods will have history on his side heading into the final round of the 89th PGA Championship after a solid one-under par 69 in the third round of the year’s final Major. Woods is hoping to win his first Major of 2007 after falling short in the Masters, British Open and US Open.

Liverpool make winning start as Premiership kicks off

Liverpool fired an early warning to their English Premiership title rivals as they made a gutsy winning start to the new season. With manager Rafael Benitez under pressure to deliver the Reds’ first Premiership trophy after spending a small fortune in the pre-season, Liverpool sent a statement of intent to Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal with a 2-1 win at Aston Villa.

New ball strengthens India’s grip on England

India took four wickets with the new ball to compound England’s dire position in the third and final Test at the Oval on Saturday. England, at stumps on the third day, were 326-9 in reply to India’s 664 — their record Test innings total against England. That left the home side 338 runs behind and still needing 139 more runs to avoid the follow-on.

Benni on the mend after head injury

South Africa striker Benni McCarthy appears to be on the mend after being rushed to hospital following a blow to the head during Blackburn Rovers’ 2-1 win at Middlesbrough in the Premier League on Saturday. McCarthy received the blow in the second half and needed five minutes of treatment before being carried off on a stretcher with his neck in a brace.

Mbeki’s E Cape tour ends on positive note

President Thabo Mbeki wrapped up his two-day imbizo in the Eastern Cape on a positive note after interacting with stakeholders, communities and different spheres of government. Spokesperson Mukoni Ratshitanga said Mbeki was particularly pleased with the support the Ukhahlamba district gave to a R1,5-billion PG Bison Project.

Fatigue cripples US army in Iraq

Lieutenant Clay Hanna looks sick and white. Like his colleagues he does not seem to sleep. Hanna says he catches up by napping on a cot between operations in the command centre, amid the noise of radio. He is up at 6am and tries to go to sleep by 2am or 3am. But there are operations to go on, planning to be done and after-action reports that need to be written.

DRC army halts operations against Rwandan rebels

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has suspended Tutsi-led military operations against Rwandan Hutu rebels in an effort to avoid further ethnic tension in the country’s troubled east, a senior army official said on Saturday. At least 165 000 civilians have fled fighting in DRC’s North Kivu province since February.

Pinochet’s suits on sale … to supporters only

Clothes of the late Augusto Pinochet are on sale at a central Santiago tailor’s shop, but only to customers identified as the Chilean dictator’s supporters, local media reported on Saturday. About 20 pieces of Pinochet’s wardrobe are on sale at D’Adriany tailor, mainly suits and jackets he wore between 1980 and last year when he died, his elder son Augusto Pinochet Hiriart said.
