India send SA packing

Hosts South Africa were eliminated from the Twenty20 World Cup after paceman Rudra Pratap Singh led India to a 37-run win in their Group E Super Eights match on Thursday. Singh took four for 13 as South Africa made 116 for nine in reply to India’s 153 for five.

Cosatu’s list riles Lekota

The Congress of South African Trade Unions has thrown its considerable weight behind Jacob Zuma as its preferred candidate for the ANC presidency, in defiance of objections by ANC chairperson Mosiuoa Lekota. At its central committee meeting on Thursday the federation also endorsed ANC secretary general Kgalema Motlanthe for the ANC deputy presidency.

The good, the old and the ugly

Johannesburg, perhaps more than any other city in the country, has a heritage collection that embraces the complete tale of this land. Iron Age and Bushmen artefacts; remnants of Bantu peoples, colonials, gold diggers; apartheid resistance; and the political maturing and place of residence of the country’s most esteemed citizen, Nelson Mandela, and icons such as Mahatma Gandhi.

Fear and loathing in London

For the past few years I have tried to understand what makes me so fear the country called the United Kingdom. London, that great multicultural city leaves me incoherent with anger sometimes, confused many times. Many of my friends love the place. I used to, but, over the years, I have found myself wanting to be there less and less.

Pakistan secure top spot in group

Pakistan laboured to a four-wicket win over Bangladesh at Newlands on Thursday to earn themselves a Twenty20 World Championship semifinal date at the same ground this weekend. Pakistan’s win ensured they finished top of group F in the Super Eight stage with three wins in three matches.
