Sopranos bows out with top Emmy honours

United Sates mob drama The Sopranos said its final farewells when it picked up the top award at the 59th annual Emmy awards in Los Angeles on Sunday at television’s equivalent of the Oscars. The groundbreaking HBO series, which ended in June after an eight-year run, took home the awards for outstanding drama, best writing and directing.

Threat to take over Zim firms ‘not a joke’

The Zimbabwe government’s threat to take over companies defying controversial price controls is not a joke, Industry Minister Obert Mpofu was quoted as saying on Monday. Obert Mpofu told the ruling Zanu-PF party members meeting at the weekend in western Zimbabwe that the government had already started identifying companies it plans to take over.

Landis to learn fate soon, says lawyer

A United States arbitration panel has ended deliberations on embattled 2006 Tour de France winner Floyd Landis’s doping case and will reveal its ruling in the next seven days, the American’s lawyer said on Monday. Landis tested positive for the banned male sex hormone testosterone but has maintained his innocence.

Zim eyes Soccer World Cup mega-village

Cash-strapped Zimbabwe plans to build a Z-trillion (US,3-billion) games village in time for the 2010 Soccer World Cup, reports last week. The games village, to be funded by private developers, will be built on a 100ha plot near the southern city of Masvingo on the shores of scenic Lake Mutirikwi, the official Sunday Mail newspaper said.

JSE sharply lower on credit fears

The JSE was sharply lower at midday on Monday as rekindled credit fears continued to spill over on to world markets. The JSE opened in negative territory and weakened further during the morning session on last week’s news that the United Kingdom’s fifth largest mortgage lender, Northern Rock, used the Bank of England as a lender of last resort.
