It began with bread. And that is how it ended. Shortly after 4pm, on a sun-filled autumn day, the voices of Luciano Pavarotti and his father, the baker Fernando, ”who had a voice perhaps more beautiful than mine” filled the 12th century cathedral of Modena as they sang together Cesar Franck’s hymn, Panis Angelicus (Bread of Angels).

The violent nature of many recent protests was a major concern, said Gauteng premier Mbhazima Shilowa on Monday. He was briefing the media in Johannesburg on the recent Gauteng Extended Executive Council lekgotla. ”Many [protests] were characterised by street blockades, the burning of tyres and the destruction of property.”

A bungling South Africa lost 3-1 to a majestic Ghana team in an Olympic soccer qualifier at the Olen Park Stadium in Potchefstroom on Saturday. Ghana striker Prince Tagoe scored twice and midfielder Obed Ansah netted a splendid goal to join Nigeria at the top of the three-team group competing for a place at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

The Bush administration defended its economic record on Friday, following a report that showed the economy lost 4 000 jobs in August, the first job loss in four years. The administration said that the tax cuts enacted in Bush’s first term in office were ”helping keep our economy strong, flexible and dynamic”.

Pakistan paceman Shoaib Akhtar returned home on Saturday after being expelled from the inaugural Twenty20 championship following a spat with teammate Mohammad Asif in South Africa. The 32-year-old struck his new-ball partner Asif with a bat during a practice session in Johannesburg on Thursday, prompting the team’s management to send him back.

Kate and Gerry McCann, whose daughter’s disappearance has riveted Europe, are shocked to have been declared suspects by Portuguese police, a spokesperson for the family said on Saturday. After questioning on Friday, police named both British parents as suspects in four-year-old Madeleine’s disappearence on May 3.
