Gay joins exclusive three-gold club

Tyson Gay joined an exclusive club on Saturday in Osaka, Japan, by becoming only the third man ever to win three gold medals at a single world championships, overshadowing Meseret Defar’s 5 000m victory. Only fellow Americans Carl Lewis (1983 and 1987) and Maurice Greene (1999) have achieved the feat before.

The Blue Bulls look on course to fight until the end for a home semifinal berth after they ran over Griquas 46-3 in their Currie Cup encounter at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday afternoon. Leopards beat Stars in one-sided game

A clinical, workmanlike Black Leopards mauled and ultimately devoured Platinum Stars while winning a one-sided Premier Soccer League game 2-0 at a largely deserted Giyani Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Goals from the industrious Myron Shongwe in the 30th minute and David Makgale in the 61st minute added to Stars’ discomfort.

Aruba braces for Hurricane Felix

Residents on Aruba stocked up on groceries, flashlights and plywood to board up windows and doors ahead of Hurricane Felix, which was forecast to pass just north of the Dutch Caribbean island on Sunday morning. Along the Pacific coast of Mexico, meanwhile, Tropical Storm Henriette moved out to sea after leaving six dead.
